The Section 22 Petaling Jaya Residents Association is appealing for Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming to intervene regarding a casket shop in their housing area.
Its chairperson Parimala Nesamany (above) said the residents have grown tired after the complaints to the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MBPJ) urging for the shop to be relocated to a commercial area have gone unheeded for the last five years.
“We, over 350 residents from Section 22, strongly objected when the shop applied to MBPJ to start their business in our housing area in 2018, but our objections went unheeded.
“Since then, we wrote appeals to the MBPJ every year to get the shop to be relocated to a commercial area. The distance from the shop to the housing area is only 20 feet (six metres). However, our appeals continue to be rejected.
“Residents are uncomfortable having a casket business in their housing area operating nearly 24 hours (a day). We hope the housing minister and the Selangor exco member Ng Sze Han would intervene immediately,” Parimala told Malaysiakini.
A search by Malaysiakini found four casket shops and funeral care services registered with MBPJ. Of these, three are in commercial areas or graveyards, while the one in Section 22 is the only one operating in a residential area.
“Each time we asked councillors and politicians for an explanation, they’d give all manner of excuses. Among others, they said the area has been converted into a commercial zone.
“How could a housing area with only 13 units of shophouses be converted into a commercial zone?” she asked.
She said the residents have already contacted Nga and Ng to help resolve the matter.
“We are not asking for the shop to be closed. Our request is only to move the business to a commercial or industrial area,” she said. - Mkini
