Constituents will help prepare meals for flood victims, says upset Wee

Ayer Hitam MP Wee Ka Siong says his constituents will help prepare tastier and more nutritious food for flood victims.

PETALING JAYA: Ayer Hitam MP Wee Ka Siong has called on his constituents to prepare meals for flood victims in the area after he expressed disappointment over the food distributed by the social welfare department.

The meals were not only poorly prepared but also delivered late, the MCA president and former minister lamented.

In a Facebook video taken at one of the temporary flood shelters at a school in Yong Peng, Batu Pahat, Wee said the 375 victims from 105 families only received breakfast at 11am, while lunch was sent to them at 2pm.

He said a similar problem had occurred at another flood shelter that he visited.

Many had not eaten because of the late delivery, and some of them had suffered from gastritis, he said.

He said the evacuees were only given noodles for breakfast, and “undercooked rice” with gravy for lunch.

“I am disappointed that the meals are not being prepared well. Therefore, I have decided to discuss with the local (village development and security) committee (JPKK) so that we could cook our own (food).

“(The food) could be tastier and more nutritious. I can prepare the utensils,” said Wee in the video clip, surrounded by flood victims.

He called on the social welfare department to improve their service to the 22 temporary shelters in his constituency.

“Please attend to the welfare of the flood victims. This should be our priority,” he said.

The number of flood victims in Johor increased to 46,742 at 2pm from 44,860 at 8am today, with Batu Pahat being the worst-hit district. - FMT
