KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has dismissed an application by Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Yunos to stay the execution of a judgment for RM350,000 in damages for defamation and legal costs payable to Seputeh MP Teresa Kok.
Judicial commissioner Arief Emran Arifin, who delivered his ruling online, said there were no special circumstances to warrant the stay.
He also ordered Jamal to pay RM3,000 in costs to Kok.
Lawyers S N Nair and Jaden Phoon represented Kok while Rejinder Singh appeared for Jamal.
On July 26 last year, Kok, who is also a DAP national vice-chairman, was awarded RM300,000 in damages in a libel suit she brought against Jamal. Arief had also awarded her RM50,000 in legal costs.
In 2017, Jamal had accused Kok of misappropriating Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor funds under the Selangor state government’s Skim Mesra Usia Emas initiative.
She contended that Jamal’s remarks gave the impression she had used state funds for herself and was, therefore, an unethical person.
Kok later filed a bankruptcy notice against Jamal after he defaulted in paying the judgment sum.
Jamal’s appeal to overturn the judgment is pending before the Court of Appeal. - FMT
