Decision on DNB’s 5G ‘monopoly’ soon, says minister

Government-owned Digital Nasional Bhd is the sole wholesale provider of 5G services to mobile network operators.

PETALING JAYA: A government decision is expected in two weeks on Digital Nasional Bhd’s (DNB) purported monopoly on the rollout of mobile networks with 5G technology.

“We may not necessarily look from the monopoly point of view. There are many things we need to consider,” said communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil, according to NST Online.

He said the decision could be announced soon.

Government-owned DNB has been appointed to build and manage the 5G network infrastructure and is the wholesale provider of 5G services to mobile network operators.

The company has come under criticism for purportedly having a monopoly on 5G services, and has faced challenges in recruiting network operators to roll out 5G infrastructure.

Maxis, the second-largest mobile phone company, has yet to sign up for DNB’s 5G network.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said that the government will review all monopolies that currently exist to ensure the public gets fair and better services. - FMT
