Disputing Najib's 1MDB audit acquittal is contempt of court - Fahmi

Disputing the acquittal of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak in his 1MDB audit tampering case can be considered contempt of court, said Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi stressed that the government respects the High Court’s decision and will not interfere in any judicial affairs.

“This is the process of the court, we (the government) respect its decision. The prime minister (Anwar Ibrahim) has repeatedly said that he and the government will not interfere in court affairs.

“Any parties who do (interfere) is in contempt of the court. The court’s decision must be respected,” he was quoted by Astro Awani.

Fahmi was speaking at a press conference at his ministry in Putrajaya.

Earlier today, Najib and 1MDB’s former CEO Arul Kanda Kandasamy were acquitted of abuse of power involving the audit report for the sovereign wealth fund.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court ruled that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie (answerable) case against the duo.

Najib, also a former finance minister, was charged with using his position as then-prime minister to order amendments to 1MDB’s final audit report before it was presented to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in 2016 to prevent any action against him.

Arul Kanda was charged with abetting Najib in making the amendments.

Najib is currently serving a 12-year jail sentence in a separate RM42 million SRC International corruption case. - Mkini
