KUALA LUMPUR: Fresh elections are likely to be held in the Umno divisions of Lahad Datu and Johor Bahru, according to Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid said he had sought a discussion on “the problematic divisions” with the party’s election committee chairman, Shahrir Samad.

Speaking to the media at Umno headquarters late last night, he said the party’s disciplinary board received several complaints from the divisions but most were solved after the complainants retracted their reports.

Zahid said the election committee would conduct investigations into the incidents in both divisions and, if necessary, they would be referred to the disciplinary board.

“The results there will be considered null and void. Therefore, the voting process will be conducted again for these two divisions,” NST Online reported him as saying.

A fight was reported to have broken out in Lahad Datu yesterday afternoon, while in Johor Bahru, the Umno division elections were suspended, reportedly after allegations that there were more votes than the number of delegates present.

Zahid also said he was satisfied with the polling process but stressed the need to be fair to all candidates.

Unofficial results from the party elections last night placed Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, Khaled Nordin and Johari Ghani on track to be elected as Umno vice-presidents for the 2023-2026 term.

In the contest for the 25 seats on the supreme council, the front runners were international trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, foreign minister Zambry Abd Kadir, deputy home minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, deputy finance minister Ahmad Maslan, and deputy works minister Abdul Rahman Mohamad. - FMT
