PARLIAMENT | The Health Ministry is drafting a cabinet paper with considerations to form a National Autism Council, according to Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa.
Zaliha, in a written reply to Alias Razak (PN-Kuala Nerus), said the council will comprise inter-ministry representatives, academicians, and other stakeholders.
“The council will function as a coordinated platform to provide services for individuals on the autism spectrum.
“Strategies to be taken through the council include community-based approaches, a multi-sectoral package of interventions, and involvement of local volunteers.
“These include programmes and activities planned for the short term, mid-term, and long-term involving various stakeholders, for the welfare of autistic individuals,” she said.
Zaliha noted there is an increasing number of children and individuals with autism spectrum disorder, highlighting a need for more screening and early diagnosis.
This would help improve individual development and reduce symptoms related to autism, she said.
“Such actions are needed to prevent risks of mental issues, learning difficulties, and behavioural issues among undiagnosed children and individuals, who did not start early intervention,” she said.
Previously, former senator Ras Adiba Radzi, who just completed her term, called for the formation of the council and to make it mandatory for autism cases to be reported. - Mkini
