Idrus Harun's tenure as AG extended 6 months

Idrus Harun’s tenure as the attorney-general has been extended for a further six months.

Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali said this in a statement today.

“It is notified that in line with Clause (1) Article 145 of the Federal Constitution, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented to the re-appointment of Idrus (above) as the attorney-general for another six months, beginning March 6, 2023,” the brief statement read.

The re-appointment comes amid much speculation as to the next candidate for the job following the end of Idrus’ contract this month.

Earlier last month, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim told the media that the matter was “still being discussed”.

Idrus was appointed attorney-general on March 6, 2020, by the then Perikatan Nasional administration.

He replaced Tommy Thomas, who resigned when the Pakatan Harapan government collapsed that year.

Among the other names previously touted as possible replacements for Idrus include Ahmad Fairuz Zainol Abidin, Kamaludin Md Said, and Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh.

Fairuz and Kamaludin had previously served in the Attorney-General’s Chambers before being appointed as judges.

Additionally, Fairuz was also a former deputy chief executive of the Securities Commission. - Mkini
