Insurance company ready to join Rahmah initiative - minister

The government’s plan to expand the Rahmah initiative to offer affordable insurance coverage has received positive feedback from providers, according to Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Salahuddin Ayub.

Speaking to reporters after attending a Kenduri Rahmah held in Parliament, featuring more than a dozen local vendors offering Menu Rahmah items, Salahuddin (above) said the first response received was from Etiqa Insurance.

“I will have my officers conduct engagement sessions to see how we can introduce Insurance Rahmah, whether for car, housing, assets, and others.

“Etiqa has given a positive response and welcomed this government’s initiative, so we will soon conduct an engagement session,” said Salahuddin.

The minister had last month hinted at the possible involvement of the insurance and banking sectors to offer affordable packages for the people.

Following take up from the insurance sector, Salahuddin today said he had requested assistance from International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, a former banker, to start engagements with banking industry players.

Meanwhile, Salahuddin also credited other cabinet colleagues who had pushed for the introduction of Menu Rahmah offerings in premises under their purview, such as Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi in charge of rest areas along major highways and Higher Education Minister Khaled Nordin who oversees university cafeterias.

Earlier, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul, and Dewan Negara speaker Rais Yatim joined many other MPs and their officers during their lunch break to enjoy free meals by vendors promoting their Menu Rahmah items.

Among items on offer include meals from fast food chains as well as Mydin hypermarket - the first company to participate in the programme - represented by its managing director Ameer Ali Mydin. - Mkini
