Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob has called for the contents of a Registrar of Societies (ROS) letter that approved the party’s no-contest motion for the president and deputy president posts in upcoming internal polls to be revealed.
Berita Harian quoted Ismail Sabri as saying that Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi should clarify the matter as there are conflicting media reports on the contents of the ROS letter.
“Ask him (Zahid) to show the ROS letter, it’s best for him to show it because there are two different media reports.
“One (report) said ROS rejected but in less than one day another said it has been approved. Now everyone is confused. I also read the media reports,” the former prime minister reportedly said.
Previously, Ismail Sabri said he is not defending his position as vice-president because he believes the polls are not in line with the party constitution as the top two posts are closed for a contest.
Yesterday, Zahid reportedly said Umno had received a letter from the home minister, which stated that the ROS confirmed the validity of the no-contest motion passed at the party’s 2022 general assembly.
On Jan 20 this year, two Umno members filed a notice of objection to the ROS over the resolution to not open Umno’s top two posts for a contest.
Muhammad Fiqri Firdaus Muhammad Rom and Aizat Fikri Mohd Nasir claimed the resolution was invalid and contravened the party’s constitution. - Mkini
