Kelantan PAS Youth chief Mohamad Kamal Mohamed’s remarks on the state being denied the right to host the Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2024 may have involved a misunderstanding, said the state Youth Development, Sports and NGOs Committee chairperson Wan Roslan Wan Hamat.
“The statement issued by him reflects that young people are so excited that Sukma will be held in Kelantan.
“He may be worried that the games will not be held in Kelantan because other states have hosted it twice.
“So, I don’t think there is a problem. If there is a mistake in the statement, the youth leader’s statement should be corrected,” said Wan Roslan, as reported by Bernama today.
It was previously reported that the Sukma supreme committee had officially chosen Sarawak to host Sukma 2024 while the National Sports Council will host the games in 2026.
Kelantan will instead host Sukma in 2028.
Mohamad Kamal was earlier reported to have alleged that Kelantan lost its right to host Sukma 2024 to Sarawak because of a “DAP minister known for using power in silence”.
“Kelantan Youth will take note of this denial of hosting Sukma in political history in terms of power and denying Kelantan’s rights,” he said.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has since denied the allegations, adding that her ministry has lodged a police report against Mohamad Kamal for his remarks.
Wan Roslan today said the Kelantan government accepts Sukma supreme committee’s decision for the state to host the games in 2028.
“The decision was made on Thursday that Kelantan will host Sukma 2028 but the details of the meeting cannot be disclosed.
“The reasons why our turn to be hosts is being delayed (from 2024 to 2028) must be referred to the youth and sports minister herself.
“However, preparations to host Sukma 2028 will continue,” he said.
Yeoh had previously said there was a rotation system for the hosting of the games, whereby it would be alternated between the National Sports Council and the states. - Mkini
