MACC's average conviction rate from 2018 to Feb 2023 is 89.2pct

The MACC's rate of convictions from 2018 to Feb 2023 averages out to 89.2 percent, according to cursory statistics given by the government.

De facto Law Minister Azalina Othman Said (above) revealed in a written parliamentary reply that during this period the MACC had opened 4,616 investigation papers, which led to 2,194 (47.5 percent) charges being made in court.

Of these court cases, 1,234 convictions have been secured.

However, Azalina did not disclose in her written reply how many of these cases are still pending in court.

She then provided a table of win-lose percentages for the MACC from 2018 to February this year, in which the score was 90 percent or higher except for 2019.

In 2019, the win rate was 78 percent, and the loss rate is 22 percent.

No further details were provided in the written reply.

Among the notable MACC cases that got beaten in court in 2019, were former Johor exco Abd Latif Bandi and two others being acquitted of 37 corruption and money laundering charges.

Meanwhile, the courts had also dismissed an MACC bid to forfeit RM1.15 million from Kedah Umno liaison committee and Habib Jewels Sdn Bhd allegedly related to the 1MDB financial scandal.

Former Sabah chief minister Musa Aman was also granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) on five of the 35 charges he was facing at the time, after the prosecution withdrew those charges and made amended charges.

Azalina's written reply was in response to a query from Hassan Abdul Karim (Harapan-Pasir Gudang) during the committee stage debate for Budget 2023 - which she was unable to answer during the wrap-up speech. - Mkini
