Manoj Kurup is new head of prosecution

Manoj Kurup (left) will be the new prosecution head, and Dusuki Mokhtar the head of the appellate and trial division effective April 3.

PETALING JAYA: Head of the Attorney-General’s Chambers’ (AGC) appellate and trial division Manoj Kurup has been appointed to lead the prosecution division.

He replaces Nik Suhaimi Nik Sulaiman, who retired last month.

Dusuki Mokhtar, who is Manoj’s deputy currently, has been promoted to head the AGC’s appellate and trial division.

A circular signed by Attorney-General Idrus Harun said their appointments will take effect from April 3.

Kurup, 59, had headed the prosecution division briefly during the tenure of former attorney-general Tommy Thomas.

On Wednesday, FMT reported that deputy public prosecutors (DPPs) and criminal practitioners had been waiting to see who Idrus would appoint to lead his chambers’ prosecution division.

A source had told FMT the division’s current deputy head, Masri Daud, was the frontrunner, while special litigation unit head Raja Rozela Raja Toran was also a contender to land the position.

The source also said candidates from the AGC’s other divisions with the same ranking and who had carried out criminal law work could not be ruled out.

The prosecution division deals extensively with the public and key law enforcement agencies.

The division exercises powers vested in the attorney-general as public prosecutor. DPPs from the division conduct prosecutions in all courts across the country, including high-profile criminal cases.

On top of that, the division gives advice and instructions to all enforcement agencies in relation to investigations and criminal prosecutions.

DPPs also pursue investigation papers to determine whether to institute prosecutions and deal with representations from lawyers asking for charges brought against their clients to be dropped or reduced. - FMT
