MCMC urges editors, social media admins to act on incendiary comments

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has urged online portal news editors and social media administrators to exercise their powers against comments that touch on elements of race, religion and royalty.

At the same time, the internet regulator also called on social media platform providers to be "more responsible" in taking down reported content deemed "provocative and dangerous".

"Hate speech refers to statements or images that accuse or bring down a person's value based on their race, ethnicity, religion or nationality.

"Therefore, MCMC will continue monitoring to curb sharing of false information and offensive statements with elements of race, royalty and religion," said the commission.

MCMC chairperson Mohamad Salim Fateh Din, in a statement, once again warned the public against uploading or sharing content with elements of race, royalty and religion (3R) which could potentially incite hate, via social media platforms and messaging applications.

"Enforcement action together with the police will be taken against individuals involved based on the law to protect public order," said MCMC.

While the MCMC did not refer to any specific incident, it said the latest reminder was issued following several elements identified that could potentially disrupt public order and peace in the country.

On Friday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said there will be zero tolerance towards any attempts to incite racial or religious sentiments in the country. - Mkini
