KLANG: Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu today declined to comment further on claims that an egg importer, who imported eggs from India, was awarded the contract via direct negotiation by the government.
"The ministry has issued a statement today and I have no further comment on that.
"No additional information than what has been issued today," he said after the Agrobank Back to School Aid handover ceremony to 200 students in the state.
Present was Agrobank president and chief executive officer Datuk Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah Raja Hussin.
Pressed further, Mohamad said the import of eggs will be stopped once the domestic supply has stabilised.
"Let's hope that it will be stabilised soon."
Earlier today, the ministry in a statement said the import of eggs from India does not involve public funds.
It also said the importing company fully bore any cost and risks of importing the eggs, and no public funds were used.
On Saturday, Perikatan Nasional (PN) information chief Datuk Seri Azmin Ali during a PN ceramah at Pas' base in Taman Melewar alleged that the government awarded the project to import eggs from India via direct negotiations.
Meanwhile, on the school aid, Mohamad said a total of 200 students, aged 7 to 12, from 10 schools under the Kota Raja constituency were selected to receive the back-to-school aid.
The aid, he said was aimed to help students from the B40 group, single mothers and orphans with school supplies.
The students received an allowance of RM150 each, along with school supplies such as school bags and water bottles. - NST
