TV3’s digital veil on Oscar presenters’ attire uncalled for - Kepong MP

Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng said the decision by TV3 to blur the actresses’ dresses at the Oscars ceremony is uncalled for and considered it a step backwards.

He said this after TV3 came under criticism for blurring the bodies of two female presenters at the recent Oscars ceremony during its news programme.

When asked in a press conference, Lim (above) said that the Oscars is one of the most prestigious events in the world, with high standards and regulations.

Hence, it was unnecessary for TV3 to impose a digital veil on the programme.

“So, I would like TV3 to tell us what is the need. Is TV3 of the opinion that their audience is subject to their policing and cannot judge what’s wrong and right?

“Is TV3 saying that its viewers can’t differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate attire? I don’t think it was a necessary move,” added Lim.

Lim also pointed out that he has been watching the Oscars on television since he was a student and that in the decades of local broadcasts, there has never been censorship.

“But why now? The world is supposed to be advancing and now we have this artificial intelligence, ChatGpt, and so on.

“So, why does TV3 not go forward but go backwards? The Oscars ceremony has been screened all over the world, even in many Islamic countries without issues.

“Why does Malaysia need to censor it? This is unbelievable," he said.

Malaysiakini’s attempts to reach TV3 and Deputy Communications and Digital Minister Teo Nie Ching for comments have been unsuccessful.

Malaysia-born actress Michelle Yeoh won the Best Actress award at the Oscars on March 13 for her role in the film "Everything Everywhere All At Once".

However, TV3's coverage of the event has triggered a debate among netizens about its censorship of the female presenters - actresses Halle Berry and Jessica Chastain.

The duo are former Oscar winners themselves.

While some netizens called the move embarrassing for the local media, others supported the censorship as the news programme is watched by all age groups, including children. - Mkini
