PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has said that younger members must get the opportunity to take over the party’s leadership – but only when there is a need to do so, and the right candidates emerge.
His comments were part of his opening speech at the party’s Bagan Datuk division’s annual meeting today, at which he retained his role as divisional chief after running uncontested. A total of 424 delegates attended.
“I am not going to get carried away; I will hand over the posts of Umno division chief and Umno president to those who I feel can strengthen our party,” he said, according to Bernama.
Zahid added that he forgave those who hurled public accusations at him but warned of action against those he called “enemies from within”.
“We do not want factions … through unity and empowerment, Umno will rise and secure the support of the people,” he said.
Perak Umno chief Saarani Mohamad was also returned unopposed as division chief of Lenggong. - FMT
