Selangor Perikatan Nasional has alleged that it was denied a permit for a venue to hold its campaign programme due to political interference from the government.
The event, scheduled for tomorrow at 8.30pm, was intended to take place in a field in Tanjong Karang, Selangor, with the presence of Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor as a distinguished guest.
Selangor PAS Communications secretary Roslan Shahir Mohd Shahir claimed that the Kuala Selangor Municipal Council (MPKS) sent a letter informing the coalition that its application to use the field was rejected on May 31.
MPKS allegedly stated that the field can only be used for recreational activities.
“When we submitted the application to MPKS on May 26, it told us there were no problems.
“(At the time) no reservations were made by anyone else for that date,” he said during a press conference at the Selangor PAS headquarters in Shah Alam today.
According to Roslan (above, centre), the Selangor PN team conducted checks and discovered that a government-organised children's festival was now scheduled at the same time and place.
This led the coalition to believe that the government interfered in its application with MPKS.
“We are disappointed with this rejection as it hinders the public from peacefully gathering in the parliamentary area that we represent. We have no desire to challenge MPKS.
“What concerns us is that political pressure and interference from the Pakatan Harapan-BN government could have influenced the decision,” he added.
Call for fair governance
Selangor PN urged the Harapan-BN government to refrain from administrating the state unfairly with bias as the state election nears.
It advised the government to not use its powers to “hinder the rights of the people solely based on political differences”.
“This incident is deeply regrettable and signals that the Harapan-BN state government is concerned about our influence and the uprising of the people in Selangor. They are afraid we will win (in the state elections).
“Selangor, which is a progressive and advanced state, must be provided with an infrastructure for the benefit of all parties to gain the support of the people.
“(The state government) should not monopolise public facilities for self-interest and then claim to be fair and democratic,” Roslan said. - Mkini
