Newly minted top cops Razarudin Husain and Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay have been told to focus on addressing hate speech that touches on religion, race and royalty (3Rs).
According to Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, it should be among the matters that the inspector-general of police (IGP) and deputy IGP must prioritise as part of their new duties.
“Two days ago, when I was ordered to have an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, this was the first order (that the king) touched on.
“And this gives a clear message to Razarudin and Ayob, as part of their early tasks, that they have to address this matter properly,” Saifuddin (above) said today.
The minister made the remarks while delivering his speech during the duty handover ceremony between Razarudin and outgoing IGP Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani, held at the Police Training Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
At a press conference later, Saifuddin said offensive statements that touch on 3Rs had become more alarming in the country.
Hence, he stressed, it was why more attention should be given to addressing the problem.
The minister said issues surrounding the 3Rs had become a trend since 2020, and Suhakam has also raised the matter.
"For example, when political disagreement gets turned into a fight about religion, it will create a bad situation for the country.
"The same when political disagreement becomes an issue about racial interests. And worse now, we can see how some openly criticise royalty without any respect towards the institution.
"So, because this has become an unhealthy trend, those who are holding the highest posts in the police force have to give attention to it, among other matters."
Asked whether he expects the trend would turn worse during the upcoming state elections, Saifuddin said: "I hope not".
Inspector under probe
On an unrelated matter, Saifuddin said police have opened a total of eight investigations against a female police inspector who was recently implicated in viral videos, where she allegedly got into an altercation with the public and was rude towards several other police personnel, among others.
The officer has been suspended from official duties since last week, pending investigations.
Two of the investigation papers were opened under the Penal Code's Section 506 (criminal intimidation) and Section 186 (obstructing civil servants in the discharge of their public duties).
The police's Classified Investigation Unit, which is under the Criminal Investigation Department, is investigating the two cases.
The six others are disciplinary investigations, opened by the Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department. - Mkini
