After Umno Youth, now MCA Youth wants DAP to apologise too

MCA Youth is demanding an apology from DAP, following a similar demand from its Umno counterpart.

In a statement yesterday, MCA Youth deputy chairperson Tan Chee Hiong (above) said DAP needs to engage in self-reflection before it can have a fresh start.

He agreed with Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh that DAP should apologise for its past actions.

“Politics should advocate understanding, acceptance, and cooperation, not incitement and division. What we need is a political culture that promotes collaboration, not a culture centred around vilification, instigation, and misdirection.

“DAP has previously apologised to Gabungan Parti Sarawak for the sake of forming the government and national unity but has never extended an apology to MCA.

“Their previous negative remarks, including describing MCA as traitors to the Chinese community, have led to voters abandoning MCA. That is why MCA Youth believes that DAP should not only apologise to Umno but also to MCA,” Tan said.

Losing support

Tan stressed it cannot be ignored that DAP’s statements have caused both MCA and Umno to lose significant support.

“These irresponsible remarks, including accusing MCA of colluding with Umno to sell out the Chinese, portraying MCA as an accomplice to Umno’s racism, and labelling MCA as traitors for defending the ‘corrupt’ Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, have caused considerable damage.

“I agree with (Penang Chief Minister) Chow Kon Yeow that we need to look towards the future, but looking towards the future does not mean we can ignore the past. An apology is the first step, but DAP also needs to engage in self-reflection and change.

“In our society, we need to build a more responsible, fair, and inclusive political culture. We need an environment where everyone feels respected and accepted.

“We need more than just an apology; we need to see changes in the DAP. Only then can we ensure a healthier and fairer political environment for the future of Malaysia.”

Learn from mistakes

Tan said only when all political parties can acknowledge and apologise for their mistakes can they truly look towards the future.

“This will not only improve our support in the upcoming state elections but also contribute to a more united and harmonious nation.

“We need to learn from our mistakes instead of avoiding them. Let us look forward together and work towards the future of Malaysia," Tan said.

Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh

Yesterday, Akmal said DAP should publicly apologise to Umno for its members to accept DAP.

On the same day, Zahid said there was no need for DAP to apologise as the matter has already been resolved during negotiation to form the coalition government, and should not be raised again.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke echoed Zahid’s view and called on the federal government’s parties to let bygones be bygones. - Mkini
