'Good luck' - Zahid tells former Umno 'warlords' wanting to join other parties

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has wished “good luck” to former party members who are expected to join other parties for the upcoming state elections.

"There was a question asked about the 10 (former) Umno 'warlords' who would not be attending the party's general assembly for the first time this year.

"I was told that they wish to join other parties. I wish them good luck," Zahid told a press conference at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur today.

Although Zahid did not mention names, it is believed he was referring to former Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin, former Ketereh MP Annuar Musa, former Tanjung Karang MP Noh Omar, and Arau MP Shahidan Kassim.

In addition, Umno also suspended several other big names including former vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein and former information chief Shahril Hamdan.

Meanwhile, Zahid also reminded Umno members that the party's collaboration with its allies in the coalition government is not only to retain existing Umno seats but also to win new ones.

"For the (upcoming) state elections, we will move together with our friends in the unity government.

"Not only to retain (seats) but also to regain lost ones and win new ones," the deputy prime minister said.

Perikatan Nasional (PN) previously claimed that at least 10 former Umno 'warlords' were set to join the coalition soon.

In reply to Zahid's "invitation" to join the Umno AGM, Khairy said that the party will be wiped out in the six state elections.

‘Umno still standing’

Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Penang, Selangor, and Negeri Sembilan are set to go to the polls soon. PN holds the first three while the rest are under the coalition government.

Elaborating, Zahid said that Umno had experienced instances where several of its leaders had "deserted" the party, but said it still commanded support.

"It has happened before, but God willing, the Malays and Muslims still supported Umno." - Mkini
