KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has agreed in principle to the recommendation by Umno to establish the Gig Economy Commission Malaysia (Segim).

Deputy prime minister and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Segim aimed to regulate the ecosystem of the gig industry.

It will take care of the welfare of the entire economic chain, including service providers, suppliers, workers and consumers.

“As many as 1.12 million people are involved in this industry so far. The number is increasing by 23% every year,” he said in his closing speech at the 2023 Umno general assembly here today.

In his policy speech on Friday, Zahid said this sector was growing rapidly with 80% of gig economy users being young people.

Zahid said the establishment of Segim will give new hope to all participants in the gig economy, including those in the delivery sector such as Grab, Lalamove and Foodpanda.

“It will also enable the government to structure a taxation system for this gig economy,” he said. - FMT
