Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan has advised his suspended party colleague Tajuddin Abdul Rahman to let bygones be bygones on the party’s performance in last year’s general election.
He was responding to the former Pasir Salak MP, who said the former Umno secretary-general, had failed to advise party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi about the 15th general election (GE15).
Ahmad pointed out that he was not the only adviser to Zahid in the party when he was the then secretary-general.
“The Umno president’s advisers include the top five, the 21 political bureau members and the 56 supreme council members.
“I am the executor of the decisions of meetings A, B and C,” he said in a Twitter posting today.
The Pontian MP acknowledged that important decisions were made in those meetings that could not be executed.
Among them was the call for the GE15 to be held as soon as possible, with the best timing right after the Malacca and Johor state polls.
Umno and BN had garnered overwhelming victories in the Malacca and Johor state elections during the Covid-19 pandemic in late 2021 and early 2022, respectively.
Shortly after, Umno began pushing for GE15 to be held as soon as possible to ride on their success from those two state polls.
However, the general elections were eventually held in November 2022.
Ahmad said Umno and BN would not be as vulnerable as they are now if the general elections had been held according to their wishes at the time.
“Timing is very important in politics. (But) let bygones be bygones,” he said.
Tajuddin yesterday paid a surprise visit to the 2023 Umno general assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL).
During his visit, he criticised Ahmad Maslan for his failure as a secretary-general who “did not become a proper adviser to the president”.
“Some are good, some are not. We need to listen to the grassroots, not just the people around who flatter like (Ahmad),” Tajuddin said. - Mkini
