DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke explained that his absence from the launch of Selangor Pakatan Harapan and BN's campaign launch yesterday was due to health reasons.
Loke was among several top leaders who did not attend the event.
"I was not well, so after the programme with the prime minister in Nilai at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, I went back to rest," he was quoted as saying by Astro Awani today.
He added that he had received an invitation and mandated for Selangor DAP chief Gobind Singh Deo to attend in his stead.
He also said there will be many more roadshows to come.
Besides Loke, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his deputy Ahmad Zahid Hamidi - who lead PKR and Umno respectively - were also initially promoted as attending the ‘Jelajah Mega Madani’ in Shah Alam last night.
However, all three were absent.
In contrast, Perikatan Nasional bigwigs such as PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin and Gerakan president Dominic Lau all attended their coalition's Selangor-level campaign launch earlier the same day.
A spokesperson from the Selangor Menteri Besar Office confirmed that the prime minister could not make it as he had to attend to another matter that came at the "last minute".
However, checks with Zahid's office revealed that the BN chairperson was not scheduled to attend the programme.
Selangor Umno chief Megat Zulkarnain Omardin, who was billed as one of the speakers, was also not in attendance.
Selangor Umno deputy chief Johan Aziz told Free Malaysia Today that BN did not attend the launch as they were not made to feel an important part of it.
However, he said there will be future joint events between the two coalitions. - Mkini
