Penang Gerakan chief Oh Tong Keong said his party wants Perikatan Nasional (PN) to win the upcoming state election first before talking about a potential chief minister.
In a statement today, Oh said talk about the chief ministership was “meaningless” otherwise.
“Gerakan has only one goal - focusing on the state election and winning. Only then will we consider candidates for the chief minister.
“Therefore, it is a waste of time to discuss these issues now,” he said.
Oh (above) said this in response to DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang’s recent statement which questioned if Gerakan president Dominic Lau was PN’s candidate for Penang chief minister.
Lim also asked if Oh will back Lau’s hypothetical chief ministership bid.
Last weekend, Lau announced that he will be fielded as a PN candidate in Penang. His two previous electoral outings were in Kuala Lumpur. Both were unsuccessful.
Oh accused Lim of trying to “create suspicion” among Gerakan leaders by making those innuendoes.
“Lim actually played tricks by asking me if I agreed with Lau to be the chief minister of Penang.
“I would like to clearly inform Lim, his son (Lim Guan Eng), and the DAP that Gerakan will not be alienated (sic) by DAP,” he said.
Oh said what was more pertinent was DAP’s 15-year “lacklustre” performance in Penang.
“These three terms of government only left us with corruption cases such as the Penang undersea tunnel, the destructive reclamation plan, traffic congestion, flooding, water shortages, and expensive housing prices.
“DAP should explain these important issues to the people,” he said.
Oh said should PN form the next state government in Penang, then the new administration will chart a new future for the state and move towards balanced and comprehensive development. - Mkini
