PETALING JAYA: A letter, purportedly from PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, offering Khairy Jamaluddin the post of deputy president in the party is fake, according to PKR.

The letter, which bore a PKR letterhead, had been widely-shared on social media today, renewing speculation on the former Umno Youth chief’s future following his sacking from Umno.

A senior party leader told FMT the font was different, saying “we don’t use that font”.

FMT has also reached out to Saifuddin for comment.

Khairy’s political future has been up in the air since he was sacked from Umno in January for allegedly breaching party discipline during the 15th general election (GE15).

Fuelling further speculation today was a photo uploaded by Khairy on social media, where he was seen smiling with Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin had publicly offered Khairy a seat on the Bersatu Supreme Council in May, saying he believed the former health minister could contribute to the party.

However, Khairy has said he needed time to consider Muhyiddin’s offer as he did not want to rush his political comeback despite the upcoming elections in six states.

Last week, Khairy was photographed in a meeting with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Umno vice-president Johari Ghani, as well as economists and government officials, adding to speculation about his political future.

The former Rembau MP was also reported to have said that forming a new political party was another option for his political comeback.

Previously, Khairy had also joked with former DAP leader Ong Kian Ming about forming a party together.

While campaigning during GE15, Khairy tried to position himself as an “Umno reformist”, claiming that the party had lost its way and must “go back to its roots”.

Khairy said he wanted to make Umno a party that the Malays could be proud of again.

In GE15, he narrowly lost the contest for the Sungai Buloh parliamentary seat, a Pakatan Harapan stronghold, to PKR’s R Ramanan by 2,693 votes. - FMT
