PM offered outgoing IGP overseas 'role' - home minister

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had offered outgoing top cop Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani a “role" overseas as a retirement plan.

This is according to Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail during his speech at the inspector-general of police duty handover ceremony between Acryl (above) and Razarudin Husain in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

However, Saifuddin said, Acryl was reluctant to accept the posting abroad as he wanted to be close to his family including his grandchildren.

"Several weeks ago, after we had a meeting with the prime minister, Acryl stayed a little longer to have a chat with the PM. They had quite a lengthy discussion.

"I only learned later that the PM had asked Acryl about his retirement plan. Actually, the PM was inclined towards positioning Acryl for a role overseas.

"But Acryl (said) he was thinking about his grandchildren, his family, and also his fellow mosque congregation members," Saifuddin added.

The minister did not specify the kind of role that Anwar had offered Acryl nor did he mention whether the former had accepted it.

During Acryl's speech earlier, he spoke briefly about how the prime minister had made him an offer, but did not elaborate.

"When I told the prime minister about my intention to retire from service on Oct 3, he was very concerned and offered me a plan for after my retirement.

"I had never thought that he would extend such kindness, and thus I would like to extend my appreciation to him for being concerned about me," he said.

Acryl was appointed as the IGP in May 2021. His service was later extended on a contract when he reached retirement age in October 2021.

His contract should end on Oct 3 this year, but Acryl reportedly had opted for early retirement.

Malay-daily Berita Harian recently reported, quoting sources, that Acryl will be appointed to a leading role at a government-owned financial institution after his retirement.

‘Nothing odd’

Meanwhile, during his speech today, Acryl Sani said there was nothing unusual with his early departure from the force.

"Ladies and gentlemen, you might find this odd but there is nothing peculiar in this leadership transition.

"Especially because the situation warrants me to fulfil another duty outside,” he said. - Mkini
