More than two decades after he was removed from Umno, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will once again be present at an Umno general assembly, but this time as a guest of honour.
Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said Anwar will be present for the opening session on June 9 alongside leaders from all 19 component parties across four coalitions in government.
“This will be a historical moment, for all various parties that form the government to attend the Umno AGM,” said Asyraf during a press conference at the Umno headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.
Asyraf also denied reports that Umno Youth will not be extending similar invitations to their counterparts in other government parties.
"Usually, the respective wings will follow the lead of the main branch. If Umno itself is inviting the unity government’s parties, then they will follow suit," he added.
Earlier today, Harian Metro quoted Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh who said his wing's assembly will be kept only to Umno members, as they need to first fix their own house before allowing others in.
Can other ex-members attend?
Asked whether Umno will be inviting some of its recently sacked leaders, Asyraf pointed out that only delegates will be allowed to participate but those who miss the party are still welcome to be at the World Trade Centre and shop around at the booths.
"They can even 'renew' their Umno sampin," he quipped.
Unlike previous years, Asyraf said the total number of delegates has increased to 6,341 - 1,134 Puteri Umno, 1,160 Umno Youths, 1,159 Women and 2,808 from the central body.
"After amendments passed to the party constitution, information chiefs from the division level and the wings will attend the AGM for the first time," he added.
Ahead of the upcoming six state elections, Asyraf said he expected delegates to raise related issues in their debates, as well as matters on the economy and people's welfare.
The Umno AGM will begin on June 7 with the official opening for the Umno Youth, Wanita Umno and Puteri Umno assemblies, which will be held the next day.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will be delivering his keynote address on June 9, followed by debates and winding-up speeches on June 10. - Mkini
