PN to capture Penang? Saifuddin calls out Muhyiddin's 'propaganda'

Pakatan Harapan secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has dismissed Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin’s remarks that the coalition stands to capture Penang in the state election expected next month.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, Saifuddin (above) pointed to recent verbal exchanges between PAS and Gerakan that highlighted conflicting stands by the two PN parties.

“There is nothing wrong to harbour a desire (to win) like what Muhyiddin is doing.

“But Muhyiddin himself knows that his statement is mere propaganda that even he does not believe in, yet he wants the people to,” said Saifuddin.

“How can Muhyiddin convince Penang voters when Gerakan continues to ask PAS to apologise over every single political mistake by the party?” he asked.

Saifuddin was responding to Muhyiddin’s reported remarks that PN has so far identified “nearly 20 seats” in Penang where the coalition stands a chance to win, and it only needed “another one percent” to win a majority in the 40-seat state assembly.

Previously, Gerakan - PN’s lead component in Penang despite having zero seats - hit out at PAS leaders over several controversial remarks, particularly Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Noor’s claim that touches on Penang's sovereignty.

Penang Gerakan chairperson Oh Tong Keong, who criticised Sanusi, also demanded Kuantan MP Wan Razali Wan Nor to apologise to all healthcare workers in Malaysia for the PAS lawmaker’s comments that nurses’ uniforms were “too tight”.

Saifuddin, who is also Pantai Jerejak assemblyperson, said PN should not use the outcome of the 15th general election (GE15) as its benchmark for the upcoming six state elections.

“Just based on the GE15 results, Muhyiddin has taken a simplistic approach to building a narrative that PN will continue to attract voters’ support.

“By right, since seven months ago, the people can clearly see that while PN continues to play politics, the (federal) government remains focused on the economy and people’s welfare,” he said. - Mkini
