The Local Government Development Ministry is reviewing the condition requiring private developers to build affordable houses in mega projects they undertake, said its minister Nga Kor Ming.
He said the review is being carried out in alignment with the Madani concept to ensure active involvement of the private sector in providing affordable housing according to locality.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called on the ministry to review conditions set for housing developers to ensure they provide affordable housing for all mega projects developed.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said this is necessary as the requirement to include at least 30 percent of affordable housing was not complied with.
The requirement for private housing developers to build at least 30 percent of affordable housing in mega housing projects has been imposed since 1981.
According to Nga (above), the ministry is always aware of the issue of providing affordable housing because home ownership is one of the main focuses of the ministry to ensure the people’s well-being.
