STM Lottery Sdn Bhd, previously known as Sports Toto Malaysia, is seeking a meeting with Kangar Municipal Council president Norazlan Yahya.
This comes after the Perikatan Nasional state government in Perlis revealed it would not renew the licences of gambling premises beyond the end of the current period of operations. The licences expire in March 2024.
STM’s communications and sustainability deputy general manager Giam Say Khoon told Malaysiakini that a letter requesting the meeting was delivered in person to the municipal council yesterday.
“We are still waiting for the council’s reply and for them to make the arrangements,” he added.
However, Giam declined to reveal the contents of the latter.
Sports Toto has four outlets in Perlis. Two are located in Kangar and one each in Kuala Perlis and Padang Besar.
Whereas Da Ma Cai and Magnum have an outlet each in Padang Besar and Kangar respectively.
Malaysiakini has contacted Da Ma Cai and Magnum 4D for comment on the state government’s decision.
Drastic manner
Yesterday, state housing and local government committee chairperson Fakhrul Anwar Ismail said the decision is in line with the stand of the PN coalition to stop gambling activities after taking over the administration of the state government.
Fakhrul also said the action was not taken in a drastic manner, adding that the Kangar Municipal Council had given a verbal briefing and issued a notification letter to the entrepreneurs involved.
He pointed out that closing gambling premises is not a new thing as it has been implemented in the other PAS-PN-helmed states of Kelantan, Terengganu, and Kedah. - Mkini
