PETALING JAYA: Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman is in a challenging phase of his political career, say former Umno stalwarts Shahril Hamdan and Khairy Jamaluddin.

Shahril, a former Umno information chief, said Muda seems to have been sidelined by Pakatan Harapan, with the party’s application to join the coalition still unanswered for now.

Speaking on an episode of the Keluar Sekejap podcast today, Khairy agreed, saying Syed Saddiq seemed to have lost his “market” after the 15th general election (GE15).

Before GE15, he said, Syed Saddiq was vastly popular on TikTok and among voters aged 18 to 21, who would have been voting for the first time last November.

“But I don’t know if that train has left the station. That’s my worry for Syed Saddiq. Perikatan Nasional has a strong presence on TikTok and among (young voters).

“PH, too, is trying hard. So it’s very difficult for him to create his ‘market’,” said Khairy.

He also said Muda had the “image” of being a youth party, which meant it could struggle to win the support of older folk.

“No matter how he tries to say Muda is not about age, its name is Muda. Even its candidates are young. He needs to think about the future.”

However, Shahril heaped praise on the Muar MP for his willingness to act like a Lone Ranger, particularly in pushing for the controversial littoral combat ship (LCS) project to be debated in the Dewan Rakyat.

The former Umno Youth vice-chief praised Syed Saddiq’s bravery in pushing for the matter to be discussed in Parliament, saying it showed consistency on his part and compromises by the government.

“He could have easily just folded and sat down, but he has been consistent. He is willing to hold press conferences in Parliament on his own. Kudos to that.”

Shahril said this tough spot would grow Syed Saddiq and help him reinvent himself for the future. - FMT
