Selangor villages no longer automatically exempted from assessment tax

Houses in new villages, Malay villages, and fishing villages in Selangor will no longer be automatically exempt from assessment rate taxes starting this year.

Local Government and Tourism Exco Ng Suee Lim said homeowners in these villages must instead apply for exemptions if they qualify for it.

The conditions to qualify for exemptions are that applicants be Malaysians who are residing in Selangor, have property in villages that are under 2,000 sq ft, and have a household income not exceeding RM5,000 per month.

The Selangor government had previously exempted these villages from assessment rate taxes from 2016 to 2023.

However, Ng told a press conference in Shah Alam today that such aid will now only be given on a targeted basis to those who need it.

"Those who don't meet the requirements will have to pay the assessment rate tax starting this year," he said.

Ng also mentioned that since the tax had not been collected in such villages for eight years, local councils would be sending physical notices to residents by the end of next month.

According to him, those who qualify for exemptions have three months until the end of May to file an appeal.

Meanwhile, he added that exemptions for low-cost housing in the state will be maintained. - Mkini
