PKR No.2: Azmin 30 nominations, Zaid 17, Mustaffa 6, Tian 2


Zaid Ibrahim's contest for PKR deputy president has gone up several notches after Penang's Batu Kawan and Tasek Gelugor, Pahang's Maran, Paya Besar and Temerloh along with Melaka's Tangga Batu and Sabah's Putatan cast their nominations for the former minister in their respective meetings today.

With these additional nominations, Zaid, who is also Federal Territory PKR chief, has gathered support from a total of 7 branches Saturday.

This brings the total of nomination tally today for Zaid to 17, as compared to Azmin's two for the day so far.

Azmin stlll blazes ahead, however, with 30 nominations.

Batu Kawan, Tasek Gelugor and Putatan had also nominated for incumbent PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to defend her post.

For the four posts of vice-president, Batu Kawan branch nominated today Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh, Penang deputy chief minister Dr Mansor Othman, and incumbents Lee Boon Chye and Sivarasa Rasiah.

While Tasek Gelugor also nominated Mansor, Bagan Serai parliamentarian N Gobalakrishnan, party secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution and current vice-president Mohd Azmin Ali.

Putatan, meanwhile, nominated Lembah Pantai parliamentarian Nurul Izzah Anwar, former Sabah PKR chief Jeffrey Kitingan, Gobalakrishnan and party complaints bereau head S Manikavasagam.

The respective branches are among 36 PKR branches meeting today to nominate its division and party leaders.

Also in Penang, the Permatang Pauh branch nominated Azizah for president and Azmin Ali for the deputy-president seat. This in addition to their nomination for Mansor and incumbent PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin for the party's four vice-presidential post.

In Melaka, Selangor MB Khalid Ibrahim got his first nomination for the deputy presidency from Masjid Tanah. The branch nominated Perak PKR chief Mustafa Kamil Ayub, Mansor, Fuziah and PKR youth permanent chair Yahya Shahri for vice president.

Alor Gajah PKR Gajah clinched the deal for Tian Chua to contest for the deputy president post with his second nomination to date, in addition to naming Shamsul, Fuziah, Mustaffa and Khalid for vice-president.

Both Melaka branches also nominated Wan Azizah as president. The state's Bukit Katil PKR branch became the second after Permatang Pauh to nominate Azmin for deputy president.

Three Pahang branches, Maran, Paya Besar and Temerloh nominated to maintain Wan Azizah as president and proposed Zaid as deputy president.

Maran nominated Fuziah, Nurul Izzah, Mustaffa and Johor PKR chief CHua Jui Meng for vice-president, Paya Besar named Fuziah, Azmin, Mansur and Gobalakrishnan, while Termerloh proposed Fuziah, Mustaffa, Azmin and Tian Chua.

The other branches meeting today include those in Sabah (with a total of 10 branches), Perak (a total of 8), Pahang (a total of 7), Penang (a total of 5), Melaka (4) and Negri Sembilan (2).

At the conclusion of 46 branch meetings yesterday, current vice-president Mohd Azmin Ali was leading with 28 nominations for the deputy-president contest.

Also vying for the No. 2 post is Mustafa - who had six nominations - while party strategic director Tian Chua has garnered two nominations.

Fuziah, who is also PKR elections strategist, has one nomination.

PKR branches have been meeting since Friday this week. All of the 200-plus party branches are scheduled to complete their nominations on Oct 3.

Direct voting for the top PKR leadership posts will take place from Oct 31 to Nov 21. - (Malaysiakini) -
