The proclamation of a sultan in Kelantan does not require the approval of the federal government as the Council of Succession has the say in the matter, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said today.
As such, he explained, it was unnecessary to obtain the federal government’s approval in the proclamation of Tuanku Muhammad Faris Petra as Sultan Muhammad V.
“The government cannot intervene in the affairs of the constitutional monarchy in Kelantan because the Council of Succession has the authority to determine who becomes the sultan,” he told reporters at his office at Parliament House, here.
He was asked to comment on the call by Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah recently for the federal government to step in and resolve the royal issue in Kelantan following the proclamation of Sultan Muhammad V, who succeeded his ailing father Sultan Ismail Petra on September 13.
