Could they ever stand up for Malaysians of all races? |
Perhaps unable to bear the credit won by the Pakatan Rakyat's open declaration that it had no objection to appointing a non-Malay as Deputy Prime Minister, MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong has made it his mission to target DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang.
Wee, who is also Education minister, challenged the statement made by Opposition Leader and Pakatan de-facto head Anwar Ibrahim that if all partners agreed, there was no reason why Kit Siang could not be made Deputy Prime Minister.
However, his sour grapes and lack of finesses toward his political elders did not escapenotice and drew a sharp rebuke from Kit Siang himself, who pointed out that Wee's disbelief only reflected and underscored the psychological scars that decades of subservience to Umno had inflicted on the MCA mindset.
Kit Siang |
"Are top MCA leaders, including Ministers and Deputy Ministers, ignorant of the Malaysian Constitution? Is there any provision in the Constitution which bars a Chinese or Malaysian of any race or religion from being Deputy Prime Minister? Or for that matter even as Prime Minister?"
Scarred by decades of Umno-bullying
But apart from ignorance of the country's constitution and exposing his own inferiority complex, pundits say Wee also cast doubt on his own boss Chua Soi Lek, who had tried to steal the thunder from Prime Minister Najib Razak at the recent BN congress.
Soi Lek had made a hard-hitting speech that pressed for equal rights amongst the BN component parties. But sadly, the scandal-hit MCA president ended up hitting himself more than his intended target - Umno.
Not only have Umno leaders including Najib's cousin, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, rapped Soi Lek for calling for an end to Umno's "big brother" dominance of the BN, there have also been angry calls for the MCA to be dropped from BN.
Does Wee know what he is saying? |
His sentiments were shared by Kit Siang.
"No wonder MCA Ministers and Deputy Ministers maintain monumental silence when MCA Cabinet posts have suffered one degradation after another, from Finance Minister and Minister for Industry and Commerce in Merdeka days to Deputy Finance Minister and Deputy Minister for International Trade and Industry," said Kit Siang .
"Nobody would be surprised at such questions from MCA cybertroopers but when top MCA leaders also join in the chorus, it really exposes their true colors. No wonder MCA, together with other BN component parties suffered such decisive and humiliating repudiation in the 2008 general elections. Clearly, the top MCA leaders have not learnt anything from the 308 political tsunami."
