RCI: Selangor out, foreign experts in

KUALA LUMPUR: Barely 24 hours after the family of Teoh Beng Hock pulled out of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) investigating his death, the Selangor government decided to do the same.

The decision was announced by state government’s lawyer Malik Imtiaz Sarwar.

He said the state government’s decision was due to inconsistencies by Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail in having his staff serve as conducting officers while also trying to revise the inquest verdict.

Earlier, the RCI panel had visited Plaza Masalam, where the DAP political aide was found dead in the wee hours of July 16, 2009.

Meanwhile, commission chairman James Foong today also decided to recall forensic pathologists Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand and Dr Peter Vanezis as witnesses.

The inquiry is being held after a coroner’s court had earlier reached an open verdict, declaring that Teoh’s death was neither suicide nor homicide.

At Plaza Masalam, the panel guided by the investigating officer of the case, ASP Ahmad Nazei Zainal, first surveyed the fifith floor of the building, where Teoh’s body was found.

They then proceeded to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office at the 14th floor, where Teoh was interrogated overnight before his death.

The team also spent some time at the window area where Teoh was believed to have fallen off.

They also looked through some photographs and asked Ahmad Nazei and Bukit Aman crime scene investigator officer DSP Sharul Othman Mansor a few questions for clarification.

The panel members also visited a meeting room where Teoh’s interrogation took place and the area, formerly a pantry, where Teoh was last seen alive.
