‘Many greedy reps, MPs, ministers in BN system’

It is important for BN representatives to first gain people's respect, says former minister and ex-Gerakan chief Dr Lim Keng Yaik.

LUMUT: The present Barisan Nasional political system is allegedly thriving on corruption and cronyism with many of its elected assemblypersons, members of parliament and ministers wanting contracts and kickbacks according to former minister Dr Lim Keng Yaik.

Rubbing his palms together, Lim who set the tone at the BN state convention on Saturday, claimed such politicians indicated that they want their hands to be ‘greased’ (meaning corruption).

He said this was the main reason why people declined to support BN candidates, running away from the coalition’s corrupt administration.

The former Gerakan chief and Beruas parliamentarian also took a dig at the staging of Saturday’s extravagant BN state convention.

“What is all this for? … (Is it) for the delegates to go back home and forget (what is 1Malaysia all about)?,” he asked sarcastically

He adviced BN leaders not to be racist but to go to the ground and do justice by serving the people who elected them.

He said it was important for BN reps to first gain people’s respect.

He recalled that there was a time when politics was clean and politicians served the voters gave good and meaningful service as elected representatives.

Lim said the equation however seems to have changed with elected lawmakers taking the role of masters and allegedly robbing the people.

Lim’s unexpectedly candid speech held the audience spelbound and earned him rousing applause.

The overwhelming crowd support left his political peers like former MIC veteran chief S Samy Vellu, PPP chief M Kayveas, former Umno Wanita chief Rafidah Aziz and MCA chief Dr Chuah Soi Lek at the wayside.

Also present at the convention were Perak state BN leaders, Gerakan deputy chief Chang Ko Youn and state MIC and MCA chiefs S Veerasingam and Ong Ka Chuan respectively. - FMT
