Musa slams caveat on NCR land for natives

Communal land titles issued to kampung folk 'strictly for cultivation and tilling in perpetuity', says Sabah Chief Minister

TONGOD: Natives customary rights (NCR) lands which the Sabah government is ‘granting’ to kampung folk here and statewide comes with a ‘not for sale’ caveat.

It appears that the land is not theirs to do as they please.

According to Chief Minister Musa Aman the land is ‘strictly for cultivation and tilling in perpetuity.’

He said the state government decided to approve the communal land titles for the landless people because of complaints that many companies from outside are taking over the land.

Musa said that since taking over the reigns of government he had issued a directive to the Land and Survey Department to issue land titles all over Sabah for people in the kampung.

“We heard (Kuamut assemblyman) Masiung Banah saying that lands are being given to outside companies and not villagers.

“So I told the Land and Survey director to issue the communal land titles so that people without land can get their rights,” said Musa.

Speaking at the Kinabatangan Umno Juara Rakyat programme at Kampung Simpang Entilibon here yesterday, Musa said the titles would be issued on condition that it could not be sold.

“We want the land to be passed down to the future generation,” he said.

He added that the government would continue with existing programmes like Mesej and PPRT while new ones would also be created to improve living standards in the kampungs.

The land will be developed to boost the income of the kampung folk and in the end bring them out of the poverty, he said.

‘Don’t blame me’

Meanwhile, Kinabatangan MP when welcoming Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin during his visit to the constituency said its was almost impossible to develop his constituency due to its sheer size.

Bung, known for his bluntness, also appeared to lay the blame for the poor state of development in his constituency at the doorstep of the deputy prime minister.

He said he had done his best to develop his constituency by taking his constituents’ need to the top leadership and “if nothing has still been done don’t blame me…”.

Masiung Banah, who was also present at the Juara Rakyat programme said “the people of Kuamut are ready to face the coming elections and know how to repay kindness.

“I can assure you that the people of Kuamut will not go down as traitors but as warriors,” he said.

Deputy chief ministers Joseph Pairin Kitingan and Peter Pang, rural development minister Ewon Ebin, assistant ministers, elected reps, senior government officers and local community leaders were also in attendence. - FMT
