VVIP witnesses: Defence withdraws request

The High Court is hearing a trial-within-a-trial to determine the admissability of three items.

FMT ALERT
KUALA LUMPUR: An application by Anwar Ibrahim’s lawyers to put former home minister Syed Hamid Albar, former inspector-general of police Musa Hassan and CID director Mohd Bakri Zinin in the witness stand came to a nought following discussions in chambers today.

This morning, Anwar’s lead counsel Karpal Singh made a request to trial judge Justice Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah to call the three VVIPs as witnesses.

The request took the judge by surprise, who had then asked the defence as to why they did not file the application earlier.

The matter was then discussed in the judge’s chambers. However after the meeting, Karpal appeared to inform the reporters that he was withdrawing the request. No details were given.

The High Court is hearing a trial-within-a-trial to determine the admissability of three items.

Earlier, Anwar’s lawyer R Sivarasa testified that it was investigating officer DSP Jude Pereira’s decision to detain the opposition leader overnight after his arrest on July 16, 2008.

The lawyer said that the police officer was adamant about this.

Anwar, who was recalled to the stand this morning, said that Pereira did not inform him of the grounds of arrest.

Karpal: Only the charge was read, no grounds of arrest was given?

Anwar: Yes. There must be reason to arrest a person. The police must have basis for the arrest.
