Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir Abdul Taib divorced Datin Seri Shahnaz Abdul Majid with a single “talak” at the Syariah High Court here today.
The divorce proclamation was uttered in open court before Judge Mohamad Abdullah, who allowed the proclamation after being satisfied that the couple’s marriage could not be saved.
The RM400 million divorce settlement demanded by Shahnaz, who is the sister of jazz queen Datuk Sheila Majid, had put the wealth of the Sarawak chief minister’s family in the spotlight ahead of the April 16 state election.
Abdul Taib, who has been Sarawak chief minister for 30 years, has been forced to deny repeated accusations of corruption and land grabs.
The state opposition more than doubled its tally in the 71-seat assembly — from seven to 15 — during the election and took 45 per cent of the popular vote.
In her statement of claim, Shahnaz said she married Bekir on January 9, 1992, and that they have a 17-year-son.
She said her claim was reasonable because they have been married for over 19 years and her husband earns a high income as well as owns properties worth billions of ringgit.
