KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has cleared Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail of corruption allegations in relation to the Attorney-General’s recent haj pilgrimage last year.
MACC operations evaluation panel (PPO) chairman Tan Sri Dr Hadenan Abdul Jalil said today that the case has been dropped as investigations have showed “no testimony to any criminal offence.”
The PPO had in a meeting today reviewed the details of the investigation and were satisfied with Abdul Gani’s (picture)testimony.
“The MACC found that the money for the trip is his (Gani Patail) own, from his own account, the account which stores his monthly pay.
“There is no evidence of anyone giving money... payment was made from his own account,” Hadenan told reporters here today.
The country’s top lawyer had met MACC board and panel members for a dialogue in January and furnished proof of his recent haj pilgrimage to Mecca which he was said to have travelled with Shahidan Shafie.
Shahidan is alleged to be a proxy for former MAS executive chairman Tan Sri Tajuddin Ramli.
Former MACC corruption prevention panel adviser Tan Sri Robert Phang had said Abdul Gani’s explanation to the panel had failed to dispel suspicions that he was “consorting” with Shahidan. Phang had earlier this year called for Abdul Gani to clear the air surrounding allegations that he had profited from Shahidan.
Tajuddin was MAS executive chairman from 1994 to 2001. During his tenure, the national airline experienced losses totalling RM8 billion — its biggest ever — which led to complaints being lodged against him.
