17 to be charged over Bersih 2.0

The authorities are expected to formally charge at least 17 people today and tomorrow in connection with the government's recent crackdown on the Bersih 2.0 rally.

Despite the accord struck between the movement's leaders and the government to move its planned street rally to a stadium, it was learnt that 11 Kajang councillors will be charged later today for wearing yellow Bersih T-shirts during a council meeting.

Lim Lip Eng, acting as legal counsel for the 11, said his clients are being charged under Section 47 of the Societies Act for allegedly publishing propaganda of an unlawful society.

Another six people, all staff members of local NGO Empower, are scheduled to be charged tomorrow on two counts under the Societies Act.

Apart from Section 47, the six will also be charged under Section 48 of the same Act for acting on behalf of an unlawful society.
