Bakri MP arrested for wearing Bersih tee

DAP Bakri MP Er Teck Hwa was arrested for wearing Bersih T-shirt last night while he was leading a march in remembrance of Teoh Beng Hock in Muar.

NONEThis is the second time Er (left, in red) has been arrested for wearing a Bersih related T-shirt.

This is also the fourth person arrested for wearing a Bersih tee after the rally last Saturday.

Er, a first time MP, was stopped by about 50 police and FRU personnel while he was leading 20 party supporters and public members marched from Muar DAP office to his service centre 300 metres away, holding white chrysanthemums, hibiscus and oil lamps.

According to Er, the police also tried to arrest him and pull him into the polce car, as he is the only one among the crowds who was wearing a Bersih T-shirt that the home minister had prior to July 9 decreed was illegal..

NONE"Only after negotiations with Muar OCPD who had arrived, they allowed me to wear another T-shirt over the Bersih T-shirt and proceed with the march," said Er.

He was however eventually picked up by police outside his service centre at 8.30pm and brought to Muar police station to record statement.

The police kept Er at the station for investigation for over four hours, finally allowing him out on bail at 1am although his Bersih tee.

He is to report back to the station on Aug 15 when the decision whether or not to charge him will be announced.

Yellow crackdown continues

Er and five others were previously arrested by Johor Bahru police on July 3 for wearing yellow T-shirts and distributing leaflet to promote a "gotong royong" cleanliness campaign.

johor dap arrested by police bersih 030711 01Their T-shirts bore the text "Negara Bersih, Rakyat bertuah" (Clean country, the nation's fortune) that the police deemed hinted at the Bersih rally last Saturday.

Since the mega rally in Kuala Lumpur that saw a reported 50,000 take to the streets for clean and fair elections, police have continued to arrest a PAS youth leader in Kota Kinabalu on Sunday and two other PAS division leaders in Johor Bahru for wearing the Bersih T-shirt on Tuesday.

Meanwhile Shah Alam police has said they will act against Bersih related items, including neckties, that are reportedly on sale during the Selangor state assembly sitting this week. - Malaysiakini
