Bersih casualty: Baharuddin's family to protest on Saturday

Bersih casualty: Baharuddin's family to protest on Saturday

PKR leaders have called on Malaysians to gather at the police headquarters in Bukit Aman, Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, where they plan to deliver a memorandum of protest to the Inspector General of Police over the death of Baharuddin Ahmad, a casualty of "excessive" police action against the July 9 Bersih rally.

"Baharuddin marched with us on 907, let us now march for him," PKR legal affairs director Latheefa Koya told Malaysia Chronicle.

The 59-year old Baharuddin, a taxi-driver, had taken part in the rally for free and fair elections. Police say collapsed from a hear attack but his relatives say died from tear gas suffocation.

Saturday solidarity for Baharuddin

A post-mortem conducted is believed to have shown he suffered several broken ribs and teeth, indicating that he had been a victim of the unprecedented police crackdown ordered by Prime Minister Najib Razak.

A family member who had been with him lambasted the police roadblocks for delaying the ambulance, which arrived only one-and-a-half hours later. By that time, Baharuddin had already died. Baharuddin's wife is Rosni Malan, the PKR Setiawangsa chief, who was at Stadium Merdeka when the incident happened.

"We are submitting a memorandum on behalf of family of the deceased. We call for fairness, neutrality and transparency in the investigation into Baharuddin's death. We are demanding that police respind to this case immediately," PKR vice president N Surendran told Malaysia Chronicle.

A large crowd is expected to gather at 11am on Saturday, July 16, at Bukit Aman at the Lake Gardens entry to show solidarity for Baharuddin's family, who are seeking justice for their father.
