As the Bersih rally at Stadium Merdeka starts to disperse, Prime Minister Najib Razak praised the people for opposing rally. He was launching the National Cooperatives Day 2011 in Putrajaya. he had earlier planned to leave the country but postponed the trip due to growing public criticism against him for not taking responsibility.
"It's obvious that the thousands who are present (here today) are those who are against the illegal rally planned by a section of our community. If there are people who want to hold the illegal rally, there are even more who are against their plan to hold the illegal gathering," Bernama reported him as saying.
The "small section" that Najib was referring to were the Bersih supporters, who number about 100,000. The figure was provided by Bersih committe member Wong Chin Huat.
National news agency Bernama reported a crowd size of several hundreds and some UMNO-linked online portals mentioned the 2007 figure of 50,000 but even legal website Loyarburok people say the figure was at least 80,000.
"He is an utter disgrace," PAS MP Nizar Jamaluddin told Malaysia Chronicle.
Meanwhile, Pakatan leaderss condemned Najib and the police for deliberately trying to harm them at the KL Sentral. Police even fired tear gas directly at Anwar, with the canister landing just a few feet from him. He is now in Pantai getting treatment.
Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad has also sustained a serious injury. Malaysia Chronicle is trying to contact his family for news of him.
