Certain quarters have launched a deliberate campaign to undermine the police by claiming that they had resorted to violence to quell the July 9 illegal rally, said deputy inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar.
Describing them as impudence, he said their motive was none other than to make the people lose confidence in the police, which would be detrimental to the country.
"We merely carried out our responsibility in enforcing the law during the rally (in Kuala Lumpur), that's all. We were not high-handed.
"So, I call on the people not to be hoodwinked by the propaganda and slander deliberately done by these people by accusing the police of being cruel, violent, and so on.
"Our presence was to provide protection to our citizens," he told reporters after presenting contributions to orphans, disabled children and single mothers at the Nurul Iman Mosque, Kampung Gebok, Mantin near Seremban today.
Rally aimed to topple gov't, says Khalid
Khalid warned them to stop the hate campaign, otherwise the police would take action against those who had gone overboard in instigating the people to hate the force.
On claims that a similar rally is being planned, Khalid said if it was true it must be done the right way.
"Submit an application first and we will process it. If it is done according to the law, God willing, we will give permission and we will provide assistance again.
"But if it is going to be another street protest, we know of their true intention.
"They had said it before that the rally is not merely to call for a clean and fair election but to topple the government through a popular uprising on the streets.
"So this is a serious matter. We will not allow it to happen," he added.
