Inspector-general of police Ismail Omar said despite the probe still going on, those involved in the 'illegal' assembly were continuing to issue 'false' statements about the illegal gathering.

“We are still investigating the issues that are being manipulated by certain quarters, as there are some who have issued statements and screening false things about the assembly.

“I am sure that we will be able to complete the investigations into the gathering this week,” Ismail was reported by Bernama as telling journalists in George Town, Penang, today.

Ismail said he has ordered his officers to speed up the probe and take action based on the laws in place.

The police have been maintaining that only 5,000 to 6,000 people took part in the July 9 rally and that they arrested 1,667 supporters.

The protest turned chaotic when police fired tear gas and water cannons at the demonstrators, resulting in many injured and the death of a former military personnel, Baharuddin Ahmad, 59.

However, the Bersih 2.0 organisers have declared their protest a huge success, saying that at least 50,000 people had marched despite police warnings and blockades.

To counter accusations of brutality, the police have set up six special teams to probe the claims and compile video evidence. - Malaysiakini
