MACC's spanking new RM140,000 interrogation room

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency today tried to show it is serious in adopting the recommendations of the Royal Commission of Inquiry by unveiling to the media a newly completed interrogation room.

NONEThirty-six of these state-of-the art interrogation rooms, worth between RM140,000 and RM160,000 each, will be put in place nationwide to show the MACC's transparency in recording statements from witnesses or those accused.

MACC director of investigations Mustafar Ali said a similar system had been adopted by the anti-graft authorities in Hong Kong.

"Witnesses or suspects will be taken to the interrogation room, where their statements will be recorded visually, and also on audio via recording equipment.

"For suspects, we will provide a copy of the recording. For witnesses, we will produce the recording if they turn hostile while giving testimony in court," Mustafar said.

With this move, he hoped, the MACC's reputation as an graft fighting body would be restored.

"Actually, our morale remains high despite the RCI recommendations," Mustafar said when showing media personnel around the newly-completed interrogation room at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.
