Malaysian Bersih student in Egypt faces expulsion

A Malaysian student in Egypt could be expelled from his university for involvement in the Bersih 2.0 rally in Cairo last Saturday.

According to Selangor PAS commissioner Dr Rani Osman, action was taken against the final-year Theology student upon the instruction of the Malaysia Embassy in Egypt.

He was accused of facilitating the Bersih 2.0 rally at Cairo... We are still investigating. Hopefully it is not like that (expulsion), he said when met by reporters at Shah Alam court complex today.

Rani said he was informed about the incident by a Selangor Islamic Religious Department officer stationed in Egypt.

The officer by the name of Farizan Subhi is charge de affairs of Malaysian students in Egypt sponsored by the department.

Farizan will meet with the embassy officer and university authorities tomorrow to obtain more information.

"I asked him (Farizan) to find out if the letter has stated that he has been expelled.

"If it is verified that the student has been expelled, we will ask for the reason," he said.

NONERani (left) added that the student does not face any academic difficulty and will graduate in another year.

Yesterday Yayasan Terengganu director Aziz Mamat warned that the foundation will terminate the education loans extended to the state's students found to have taken part in the rally.

He said pictures of them wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the word 'Bersih' and holding the assembly at the compound of a university in Cairo had been posted on Facebook.

However, he was still awaiting a report on the matter from the foundation's officers in Cairo and the Malaysian Students Department before initiating taking further action against the students. - Malaysiakini
